If you’d prefer to learn visually, check out the video! We won’t mind!

#1. Hot Drop Shopping

As soon as you land, you should be looking for a weapon IMMEDIATELY. Everything else comes second. If you dropped hot and there are enemies close, start shooting at them right away. Early game is the perfect time to get the jump on under-geared opponents.

#2 Location, location, location…

Use the environment to your advantage. Try to get the high ground. Take cover behind boxes, hills, buildings, and other obstacles if possible. Keep tucked near corners and edges of objects when able. A lower profile in general makes you a HARD TARGET to hit.

#3 Love Yourself

Prioritize healing over everything else, including looting and fighting. You are useless to your team if you are one shot from being knocked. [EXTRA TIP] The body shields of freshly dead legends are fully charged. Swap out your damaged shield for a fresh one on the fly to save on shield cells and batteries!

#4 “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” -Benjamin Franklin

Keep your heal hotkey set on your shields — batteries if you have them, they’re the most useful heal in hairy situations (hold “up” on your d-pad for consoles and “4” for PC).

#5 I Have Powers?

Don’t forget to use your utility skill and ultimate! They cool down fast and are a big part of what makes Apex legends unique. Also don’t forget to use those tasty cakes. Some legends gain more benefit from ultimate accelerants than others like Lifeline and Wattson.

#6 Use The Danger Room

You can switch between legends to test their abilities in training mode. While inside the training area, you can also build up your confidence and knowledge of the weapons, their recoil patterns, and their attachments. [EXTRA TIP] Practice with no mods on your guns to REALLY master them!

#7 Walls Don’t Shoot

Keep to the edge of the circle to know your back is safe… OORRRRR just go out and hunt if you’re a beast!

#8 Know The Local Customs

Be aware of campers on choke points, res stations, replicators, care packages, and other points of interest on the map — AND MOST DEFINITELY be aware of edge-of-the-circle gatekeepers waiting to pick off late lollygagging legends. [EXTRA TIP] Check choke points and high areas on the map for “sneakies” trying to gain a positional advantage over any teams that may wander into their web.

#9 A. B. C. Always Be Cunning

Basic ducking, strafing, sliding, juking, and other crafty maneuvers work wonders against many opponents. A moving target is always harder to hit than a stationary one. [EXTRA TIP] Aiming down sights slows your movement speed, so look to hip-fire in closed quarters combat unless you KNOW you can finish the duel faster than your opponent.

#10 Don’t Stop Moving

Speaking of moving… It is generally a good idea to keep moving at all times, even if your team is posted up in a particular location. You should always be strafing in an erratic, unpredictable pattern, especially if you plan to peek. [EXTRA TIP] Its generally not a good idea to peek…

#11 Run and Dump

And about being fast… Learn to loot fast. Mash that pickup button on loot and clean your inventory on the run to the next pile. Less time standing with your inventory open means less time with your head down waiting to be taken off!

#12 Zippity Doo Da

If we haven’t made it clear by now, Apex Legends is all about movement. There are several ways to speed up travel built into each map in the form of; Redeploy Balloons, aka Jump Towers, Ziplines, and as of Season 7, vehicles! The Trident vehicle will be exclusive to the Olympus map at this time however. You can hold down the interact button (“X” — for PC and XBOX or “SQUARE” — for PS) to cross intersecting Ziplines. You can jump while on Ziplines, and even reverse direction, up to 3 times MAX per use. You can also get an extra jump off of Octane’s Jump Pad’s by pressing jump JUST as you hit the pad. [EXTRA TIP] Use Redeploy Balloons for scouting by looking around as you ascend and jumping off before you reach the top.

#13 Because YOU Like Nice Things

Seems like a basic one, but ping items for your teammates that you think they could use, or may want. The ping system in Apex is one of the things that makes this Battle Royale stand out, so make sure to utilize it. Also make sure not to over-ping. Don’t be THAT player…

#14 Do Be Selfish (Sometimes)

While we’re on the topic of pings, you can call “dibs” on things your team has pinged, and you can ALSO ping for things YOU need in your inventory, such as Healing Items and Ammo. If your teammate calls dibs on an item, be courteous and don’t take it. Be aware not to loot from the Deathbox of your teammates if they still have an opportunity to retrieve their items!

#15 Relieve That Itchy Trigger Finger

You don’t HAVE to shoot the enemy on first sight / first ping. A lot of times, first pings are for spotting and locating the enemy. It is not ALWAYS advantageous to be the first to shoot… You MAY just be giving away YOUR location. Try to coordinate a planned first strike with your team if possible.

#16 Don’t Bring A Cannon To A Knife Fight

Near the end of the game when its coming down to the final circles, consider dropping any slower, long-range weapons for any faster alternatives. The last few circles can get VERY small and the combat becomes VERY close quarters. IF YOU ARE A MONSTER with that sentinel, then BY ALL MEANS, 720yoloswagnoscope420 everyone for the win.

#17 Don’t Be So Eager!

Rarely finish a kill or pick up a downed teammate mid-fight. Of course this is situational… like Lifeline, Gibraltar, and Mirage’s pickup abilities… OR the need to replenish your shield by finishing an enemy… It otherwise takes A LOT of time that you COULD have used to finish the fight instead.

#18 Whats In A Name?

Try to learn the names of the legends so you can call them out in battle. Call outs will GREATLY improve your team’s ability to finish fights. [EXTRA TIP] Every legend has sounds and body profile that are unique to them and can be used for identification.

#19 Everybody Expects The Spanish Inquisition

At this point in the games life, most people are aware of the “third party”. By jumping into a fight between two other teams that are ALREADY fighting, it is often easier to secure kills and get a better position in placement. It IS best to wait for a lot of damage to be dealt and / or knocks to occur to both sides, before practicing in third party techniques.

#20 It Ain’t Over Till’ Its Over…

If you think YOU are the third party, you are PROBABLY going to get fourth partied.

Well folks, that’s all for today’s installment of Training Dummies. These were definitely beginner tips, but hopefully you learned a few new things. If you have any other topics you’d like to see us cover, let us know and we’ll try to get to it!

Until Next time… Good luck out there my friends. See you in Olympus!

Ain’t it pretty?
